Once your wedding day is over, it’s time to get back to reality and face real life again. This may involve having to deal with tricky situations such as a difficult mother-in-law which is so commonly the case. Remember, when you get married you don’t just marry your partner, you marry your partner and their family. You are part of their family now as they are a part of yours and we all know how families all have their issues, so here’s how to best deal with your new family.
1. Communicate with your partner
If someone from their family has upset you in any way, talk to your partner about it first before launching an attack on the in-laws. Tell your spouse what has happened and how they think it would be best solved. Sometimes just talking about the problem is enough.
2. Set limits
Ensure your in-laws know the boundaries in your home life. If it bothers you that they drop in every Sunday unannounced, let them know you have no problems with them being at your home, you just need to know when they plan to come so you can prepare. Let them know from the very beginning what your limits are that way they will learn early on how to treat you.
3. Be mature
Don’t act like a spoilt brat every time your mother-in-law makes you mad. Learn that there are some things that can not be changed and deal with it. Sure, you can try and help the situation by talking about it, but don’t turn it into a spat. And don’t use the silent treatment, it will only cause more problems.
4. Be kind
Understand that your in-laws are also trying to adjust to having a new family member, they may be finding it difficult as well. Be kind to them and remember they are the people who are responsible for shaping the person you have married so they must have done something right!
5. Have a sense of humour
Try to laugh things off as often as you can, it’s best to have a sense of humour about things rather than let them get to you. If you mother-in-law makes a comment about your cleaning skills simply laugh it off, don’t retaliate with a childish remark. Grin and bear it!
