Wedding Customs: Turkey

Following last week’s wedding wish lanterns blog detailing some of the wedding customs that have been, and still are, observed across Britain, we travel towards Eastern Europe/Asia, to a country that lies across two continents, to discover some of their own marriage traditions. Turkey, being a mix of many cultures, has some fascinating ceremonial events, as well as ideas about what happens if one partner should pass away..

- If either the bride or the groom should die, often their place is taken by their sister or brother. In doing this, wealth and property remain the same families, hopefully avoiding future disputes.

- Once a couple are paired up, an engagement ceremony takes place in the bride’s home, where she takes lunch with friends, relatives and neighbours, adorned in her engagement dress.

- Henna plays an important role in the wedding itself, with the bride’s hands and feet being decorated, as well as red henna being used on her head. In some ceremonies, henna is also used on the groom, the painting of which would take place at his own house.

Wedding Customs: Britain

Something that we feel should be celebrated more often is the diversity and joy that comes from the range of wedding traditions from all around the world. Each nation has different customs, and here at wedding wish lanterns, in our new blog series, we’ll be exploring and finding out about some of them, and sharing what we discover with you. So, to begin with, we look at some of the traditions that have long been observed in Britain:

- Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue are what the bride often desires to have on her person on her big day. Each object represents a different aspect of their marriage, such as fidelity, keeping old friends close and a happy and prosperous future.

- The age-old tradition of wearing white to symbolise innocence and maidenhood is still mostly complied with, more so than any other custom.

- Marrying a man with a surname that began with the same letter as the bride’s maiden name was once thought to be bad luck, as was practicing her new name by writing it before the big day; this was thought to be tempting fate.

There’s nothing like getting a rave review for our products- it’s why we do what we do, and definitely makes us get into the office of a morning. We particularly love it when a super wedding blog gets excited about using our wedding wish lanterns, and then raves about what a hit they were with all the guests who attended the special occasion. Thebestweddingblogever.com recently published an instalment saying just this, and even gave a little background history of our wedding wish lanterns, which were traditionally released to help relieve stress and worry- a symbolic ‘letting go’ of tensions inside one’s self. It’s the calm and serenity, as well as their beauty that has helped the lanterns make their way into the wedding world. Following the huge increase of proposal rates since last week’s blog was published (N.B. We have no evidence to support this statement, we are simply assuming…), we thought we’d continue to offer our words of wisdom to you, beloved blog reader, and share some more proposal ideas. This time round, we talk you through keeping the event a surprise from your spouse-to-be:

If you’re planning on getting a ring, recruit housemates/best friends, or indeed some sneaky work of your own, to steal an existing piece of jewellery; having the ring fit perfectly will make the whole event that much more magical. To help reduce ‘suspicion’, keep all arrangement/organising away from the space the two of you might share- if they catch on, the surprise won’t be nearly as great!

Of course, following this advice is (almost) guaranteed to produce a success, and thus you’ll have a wedding to prepare for. Here at WWL HQ, there’s nothing we like more than finding out about other people’s weddings, seeing how their big day is panning out, and of course, if we can, help the reception finish with a grand finale of our very own wedding wish lanterns. However, we also don’t mind watching a bit of trashy TV and simply seeing how some weddings might be, well, not to everyone’s taste, as four brides-to-be attend each other’s big days and pass judgement on who is most worthy, based on the quality of her dress, the dinner menu and the ambiance of the reception, to win a luxury honeymoon for herself and her new husband. This completely addictive (possibly for the wrong reasons- you’ll see what we mean when you watch it for yourselves) show is must-see for anyone ever planning to get married, whether in the immediate or distant future. Themed weddings: Medieval bashes

It seems that more often than ever, couples who are planning on getting hitched are doing so with a mind to make their big day as unique as possible, by incorporating a theme into their ceremony and reception, and asking guests to comply with their wishes to do so. This week, we’re exploring the possibility of making your wedding medieval themed, with costumes to boot and a hog roast to feed your guests.
Of course, if you’re going to go with a potentially controversial theme for your wedding, the best thing to do is go all out, and start with the venue. How about an outdoor village location, possibly with some chickens running around, and a nice hay barn for guests to sneak off to if they find themselves getting along particularly well. Asking your friends and family to arrive adorned in traditional clothing can be met with mixed reactions, so maybe ease the shock/horror with gentle encouragement that they won’t be the only one looking a little silly, and that it’ll be a laugh. And that you promise not to put the photos on Facebook.
Of course, whatever theme you decide to embrace, wedding wish lanterns are the only way to round off your day, by giving your loved ones the opportunity to wish you and your spouse well with beautiful lights floating into the sky.
