As we love to keep our wonderful wedding wish lanterns blog readers up to date with the important things going on in the world, we have been doing our very best to report on the wedding of the year- that is, of Russell Brand and Katy Perry. Having already discovered that they got hitched halfway across the world in an extravagant ceremony, we can now reveal that Russell has gone all out in getting his new wife a present that she won’t want to accidently lose in a hurry. Yes, lovely readers, he’s gone and got her a tiger. Yes, a real one. Yes, it has a name- Machli. A tricky thing to keep in the UK you may wonder, and you’d be wondering correctly. Apparently the big cat was only ever to be involved in the extravagant wedding itself, which took place in October, and has been left at the Ranthambore National park where the couple tied the knot, and will remain there. That’s a relief.

If there’s one thing that every bride wants to make sure of on her wedding day, it’s that the photos that are taken of her look as stunning as possible. Some will go to great lengths to make the reminders of their ceremony and reception completely unique- maybe by hiring expensive photographers, getting the groom to dress up in amusing attire…or by rolling in the mud before posing commences. Here at Wedding Wish Lanterns, we thought we’d pretty much seen and heard it all. Apparently not. The Times of India has recently reported that a new craze is being witnessed all over the place, with brides who have just been wed, or maybe have been married for a year or so, trudging through mud, walking across construction sites, or even swimming in dirty water in their bridal gowns. The trend of trashing the dress was started by photographer Jodie Keen a number of years ago, and now several women seem to have caught on to the relaxed and fun nature of this type of photographic shoot.

As the recession took its toll in the UK and USA last year, it seemed that everyone was saving the pennies, in every way that they could. For most, this meant cutting back on frivolous spending on clothes and luxury items, tightening the belt at Christmas time, and for some, postponing getting married to the love of their life. In America, Census Bureau data shows that in 2009, the numbers of couples getting hitched slumped to its lowest level, with only 52 percent of adults in the eighteen and over category stating that they were in fact joined in wedlock. This is not to say that marriage figures have not been declining for some time; with unmarried couples choosing to live together more frequently, as well as a high level of divorce, many are opting out of making it official.

a few of the miners will soon need wedding wish lanterns

Having been trapped underground for over two months, the rescue of the Chilean miners has resulted in five of the men proposing to long-term partners and girlfriends, as well as one vowing to marry his wife in church, twenty-five years after they were joined during a civil ceremony. This particular proposal was sent by Esteban Rojas whilst he was still underground, sent to the surface via a plastic tube which was used to get provisions to the men, to keep them alive until they could be rescued. The miners got down on one knee and asked the big question of the ones they love at a special celebratory party held for them in the seaside town of Caldera in northern Chile, shortly after the massive rescue operation. Sounds like several occasions for wedding wish lanterns will be coming up in the near future, if you ask us….

are these actually wedding wish lanterns

Over the years, we’ve heard several small reports of UFO sightings, of members of the public throwing themselves into a panicked state over mysterious lights shining in the sky, or indeed floating objects that look like they might be from another planet, flying in the distance. But rarely has a sighting caused such a stir as one in Richmond, Virginia just last weekend. People from all over the town had their camera-phones at the ready, to capture footage that would hopefully get them rich and catapult them to fame. Little did they know that a few miles down the road, the wedding of Elliot Norman and Jessica Winderwinkle (quite a name, we’re sure you’ll agree) was taking place, and, yes, you guessed it, they’d just released a load of wedding wish lanterns. In the midst of the chaos, the couple were dancing and celebrating their marriage, and only a couple of days later, thwarted the attempts of many civvies to get lots of exposure with their ‘UFO’ footage. Shame.

We’re very open-minded here at wedding wish lanterns HQ, which is just as well, as we hear of so many different themes for a couple’s special day, and the things which make it unique for them. As autumn draws in, and one of the spookiest days of the year gets closer, we’d like to know if anyone out there is planning a Halloween-themed wedding. We’ve always known that our wedding wish lanterns bring so much joy, inspiration and peace to thousands of people across the world, as they watch them released at happy occasions and celebrations. We have only recently been made aware, however, that people from all walks of life, from many different professions across the globe, have been using wedding wish lanterns as a basis for their work- Issey Miyake, the Japanese designer made famous by his innovative and exciting clothes collections, is one such person. In his new fashion collection, due to be unveiled this autumn, Miyake has strived to create a fabric that appears to behave like paper, with many layers bound together to give the impression, when unfolded, that the clothing item is indeed being opened out as one would wedding wish lanterns, or other collapsible paper items. This October will be a big time for Delhi, for its residents and officials of the Sports Authority of India, as the capital gears up to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Up until this point, it seems that there have been various organisational headaches for everyone, including effects of a city-wide beautification drive, meaning large piles of rubble have sprung up over the city whilst the building work is taking place.

However, newspapers have recently reported another issue that is affecting residents- most of the 220 halls owned and maintained by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been earmarked for use by paramilitary forces, meaning that many of the city’s wedding venues are now out of bounds to the public. Being perpetually in demand for Indian weddings, traditionally crowded and extravagant affairs, many couples have apparently had their big days cancelled because of the games, a statement which the MCD are denying, saying instead that only five couples have had to rearrange a date.
